This growing (in both senses of the word) art/science can inform you when to plant and to water for maximum effectiveness/yield.
Used by the ancients the phases of the moon are believed to have a beneficial effect on the growth of certain plants.
So when the moon is waxing i.e. where the light of the moon is increasing then it is believed to be the time to plant or sow vegetables that grow above the ground. Such as spinach, peppers, beans, broccoli etc.
Likewise when the moon is waning and there is less light then is the time to plant root vegetable such as potatoes, beetroots or carrots.
