Every gardener has a favourite trowel: the one that lives by the back door and goes out with them every time. We wanted to make one worth keeping. So we asked Burgon & Ball, the Sheffield toolmakers who have been at it since 1730, to make a special version of their heart shaped planting trowel, just for us.
The blade is polished stainless steel. Its sharpened point cuts easily into the soil, and its shape scoops and holds earth neatly when you're planting bulbs, bedding or plug plants, or filling pots. A solid brass ferrule joins it to a glossy coral handle, and a striped cotton tie lets you hang it up between jobs. On the blade, we've etched "With love, the Worm that turned".
It's a lovely gift for anyone who enjoys pottering in the garden or tending pots on a balcony, and you don't need to know anything about gardening to choose it. Backed by a 10-year guarantee.
Worm Top Tip
As a rule of thumb, plant bulbs at two to three times their own depth, pointy end up. If you can't tell which end is which, plant them on their side and they'll sort themselves out.
