Glatz is one of the leading sunshade manufacturers in Europe with a company history spanning more than 100 years. Glatz was founded on one maxim: keep your finger on the pulse and be ahead of your time. The forward looking and innovative nature of their parasols is a testament to this motto. Glatz's parasols are designed with functionality and ease of use in mind, ensuring that all their parasols can be operated simply and without fuss.
A Swiss Family-run Business
In 1895, Albert Glatz started his own umbrella manufacturing and repair company, a lucrative niche that soon developed into a successful business under the leadership of his son, Albert Junior. Glatz began to exhibit their famous innovative parasol systems at the Basel sample fair in 1933.
Glatz is now in its fourth generation, led by Markus Glatz, great-grandson of founding father Albert Glatz.
The Original Glatz Designs
Glatz has a huge design legacy, with many of their original designs being so forward looking that they are still being produced today. An example of this is the Glatz ALEXO, Glatz's first export. In 1932, Albert Glatz Junior developed a surveyor's umbrella and, after other experiments, invented a fully adjustable and foldable gear joint. This joint later formed the basis of the classic ALEXO® garden sunshade, which is still being manufactured today.
In 1945 after the end of World War Two, Glatz set up a strut profiling, tempering and processing line at the castle mill, together with manufacturing equipment for other sunshade frame parts. These new premises facilitated the further development of innovative systems to simplify the design and operation of these parasols. Every Glatz parasol is as easy to use as it is long lasting, and this is all down to their design and manufacturing legacy.
