Upholstered seat cushions

The upholstered cushions for the relaxing and dining collections featured on our pages are made from Sunbrella fabric, the worlds leading outdoor fabric. One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabrics looking good and to delay deep or vigorous cleanings is to properly maintain the fabrics.

This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.

We would also recommend applying Gloster Teak & Upholstery Protector to your covers once a year to help to repel water and stains.

For more information about cleaning this versatile material see the Sunbrella website, however please take care if considering machine washing as this may deplete the fire retardant chemicals in the fabric. We advise that cushions are hand washed following the instructions listed on the Sunbrella website.

Storing your cushions

Cushions should be stored in a dry location when not in use and especially over the winter months or during periods of heavy rainfall. If this is not possible, furniture (with cushions in situ) should be covered using the specially tailored, waterproof covers.

General Tips

DO NOT dry clean or tumble dry

DO NOT use bleach or aggressive detergents

DO NOT iron or steam iron

UK (Fire retardant) non-weatherproof cushions

One of the best ways to keep cushions looking good and to delay the need for deep cleaning is to properly maintain the fabric cushion cover by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded and wiping up spills as soon as they occur. Although the covers on most cushions are removable, due to their highly tailored construction, Gloster does not recommend removing the covers unless it is for replacement.

Machining Washing

Because UK specification cushion covers have a fire retardant back-coating, we advise against machine washing as this may cause the back-coating to disintegrate.

As with any item left permanently outside and exposed to the elements, regular cleaning is recommended - at least once a year. Cleaning every month when in use will ensure that the furniture remains looking at its best. If the cushion is stained with oil, butter or any other oil-based product, we strongly advise that this is removed IMMEDIATELY using a solution of warm water and mild detergent as detailed below (Spot Cleaning).

General Cleaning (Light Soiling)

1.Brush off any loose dirt.

2.Blot (don’t rub) any spills with a clean, dry cloth.

3.Prepare a cleaning solution of 1:16 mild detergent to lukewarm water, less than 100°F/40°C.

4.Spray or sponge on cleaning solution.

5.Use a sponge, soft cloth or a soft bristle brush to clean.

6.Allow cleaning solution to soak into fabric.

7.Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.

8.Allow fabric to air dry.

Spot Cleaning

1.Apply a light mist of mild detergent and water using a spray bottle.

2.Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush.

3.Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.

4.Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.

5.Wet-vacuum or blot to remove excess water.

6.Air dry, Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all soap residue is removed.

General Cleaning (Heavy Soiling)

Mould & Mildew

In extreme humid and moist environments, it is possible that some level of mildew may develop on the surface of the fabric. To prevent and remove mildew, we recommend that items are cleaned at least once a year using Gloster Teak & Upholstery Cleaner.

Household bleach can be used to clean severe mould and mildew staining:

1.Protect any surfaces other than the fabric which may come into contact with bleach. If possible, remove cushion from frame before cleaning.

2.Protective gloves and eye protection must be worn.

3.Prepare a solution of 4 teaspoons household bleach and 1 teaspoon mild detergent per 235-355ml of lukewarm water.

4.Always test on inconspicuous area before proceeding.

5.Spray or sponge the cleaning solution onto the stained area and let soak for 15 minutes.

6.Remove stain with sponge or clean towel

7.Triple rinse to remove all soap and bleach residue and air dry.
